Humourous

Title: Humourous
Series: The Best Moves
Disclaimer: Wholly original work.
Characters/Pairings: Matthew, Billy, Nicole
Rating: AA
Summary: Matthew searches for one last puzzle piece.
Notes: -

Matthew sat on the floor, quite literally puzzled. Every piece looked alike and not a one of them seemed to have the tiny bit of green on one corner. The green was crucial, as it was the last piece of the puzzle that should have green on it.

Silently, Matthew cursed Billy's puzzle-happy sister. He was ready to start pulling his hair out when he heard gentle laughter behind him.

"So this is what you're doing during your last week here," Billy said, walking into the parlor room and crouching down beside Matthew and the puzzle.

"I want to see what it looks like," Matthew replied.

"Look at the box then."

"It's not the same," Matthew stated. "I mean, there isn't that sense of accomplishment, I guess."

"And you want to accomplish something." Billy reached to run his fingers through Matthew's hair.

"Mmmhmmm."

"Anna is the same way - whenever a puzzle gets close to finished she goes crazy until it's done," Billy explained, not realizing he now had Matthew completely and utterly distracted.

"I'm not that bad," Matthew replied, tempted to pout. He'd only been staring at the puzzle for a few minutes. "I just want to find this one piece."

Just then there was a thud at the door. It seemed almost like a knock, but closer to a kick. Both men looked up as it happened again, three times in succession.

"That's Nic," Billy exclaimed, leaping up and racing for the door. By the time Matthew made his way to the entrance, both Nicole and Billy were dragging a hideous and exceptionally large candlabra into the house.

"How did you get this home?" Billy asked, finally getting the thing settled against a wall and looking over to Nicole who had her hand to her chest and was gasping for breath.

"Three. Steps. At a time," she wheezed, slipping to the floor as she did so. "But it'll be worth it."

"Are you okay? Do you want a drink?" Matthew asked, pointing to the kitchen. Nicole nodded and Matthew quickly walked down the hall. He couldn't hear all of the conversation from the front of the house as he grabbed a can of ginger ale from the fridge, but when he returned he realized that Billy and Nicole had gone into the parlor to sit.

"... was told to find a big and kinda ugly candle holder. I'd say that fits," Nicole said. Matthew knew her 'job' involved finding things for people, but he didn't really understand exactly what all it entailed. For some reason he hadn't really thought that she did all the legwork and delivery.

"Definitely big and ugly," Billy replied, smiling at Matthew as he walked through the doorway.

"Nnn. Thank you!" Nicole exclaimed from her spot on the floor as she reached up to take the can of soda from Matthew. She quickly opened the can and took a sip. "I swear I only brought that thing about ten blocks."

"You should have called us," Matthew said, a little surprised at how comfortable he felt with both Billy and Billy's extended 'family'.

"Nah, I made it just fine," Nicole replied, reaching over to pick up a puzzle piece with one green corner. "Ha!"

It popped into place perfectly and for just a moment, Matthew wanted to laugh more than he wanted to pout.
